Pittsburgh Baseball Defeats Lafayette, 4-2, Ending Florida Trip

Jim Mayer and Dan Williams each finished with two hits for the Panthers.

PITTSBURGH ? The Pittsburgh baseball team defeated Lafayette on Sunday, 4-2, brining their Florida trip to a close. The Panthers improve to 7-5 on the season, while the Leopards drop to 4-4.
Lafayette took an early lead scoring two runs in the first three innings. In the second, Mike Raible scored on a RBI single up the middle by Frank Cortazar. Then in the third, James Conrad scored on a RBI triple to left center field off the bat of Ian Law. These would be the only two runs Lafayette could score all game.
The Panthers answered back in the seventh by scoring three runs. After Jim Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) reached first on a fielding error by the first baseman, he then advanced to second on a Dan Ford (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) single to first base. Negrych then scored as Sean Conley (Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk) reached second because of a throwing error by the pitcher. Ford scored as Jim Mayer (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) singled down the third base line and Conley eventually scored on a Dan Williams (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Academy) single through the right side, leaving Pittsburgh with the 3-2 advantage.
Pittsburgh scored one more run in the top of the eighth giving them a final score of 4-2. Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), after being hit by a pitch, advanced to third as Negrych reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop. Parise then scored on a wild pitch by the Leopard?s pitcher Ted Gjeldum.
The Panthers? starting hurler, Don Rhoten (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), picks up the win for Pittsburgh. Rhoten pitched all nine innings. He faced 34 batters and struck out 9, bringing his record to 2-0 on the year.
The Leopards? starter, Tom Phelan suffered the loss on the mound.
Pittsburgh is back in action this weekend as they take on Canisius in a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch set for noon.
