Baseball Wins Both in Doubleheader Against Canisius

PITTSBURGH
In the first game, Pittsburgh scored the majority of their runs in the fourth inning. They scored eight runs off of five hits. Dan Ford (Boardman,Ohio/Boardman), Sean Conley (Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk), and Dan Williams (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Acadmey) each singled for the Panthers. Jim Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) and Jeff Stevens (Danville, Va./Dan River High) contributed with multiple RBI doubles, leaving Pittsburgh with an 8-0 advantage.
The Griffs were unable to score any runs in the first game, while the Panthers scored one more in the sixth making it a final of 9-0.
Paul Nardozzi (Victor, N.Y./Victor) picked up the win for the Panthers, giving him a 3-1 record on the season. Nardozzi gave up only five hits and struck out three in six innings. Jordon Neufeld inherited the loss for Canisius.
In the second game, the Panthers offense continued to dominate. They took an early lead by scoring eight runs in the first inning. Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) finished the game with two home runs, one triple, and a single to lead the Panthers. Ford also had a home run and a single up the middle.Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) added two singles, while Negrych had a single and a double. Also, Jimmy Mayer (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) had a single, and David Cline (Mercersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) finished with a triple for Pittsburgh.
The Griffs? scored their only runs in the fifth inning. Ricky Pillitteri singled and then scored off a R.J. Crawford single to center field. Crawford and Kevin Smith then scored off a Rich Ruscio single to left.
Despite their efforts, Canisius could not score any more runs in the game and the Panthers went on to win it 13-3.
Pittsburgh?s hurler, Don Rhoten (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) picks up his third win on the season, giving him a 3-0 record. Rhoten struck out five batters in 4.1 innings. The Griffs? Mike Bax suffered the loss on the mound.
The Panthers finish up their 3-game series with Canisius as they play again on Sunday with the first pitch set for noon.
NOTES: Pittsburgh had two errors in the games, while Canisius had only one...Copeland finished both games with five runs, six hits, and four RBIs...the Panthers had 22 hits, and Canisius had 15 in two games.
