PITTSBURGH ? Despite their efforts, Pittsburgh?s baseball team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday night at Mark Light Field. The Panthers dropped to 5-3 overall, while the Hurricanes improved to 14-4.
The Hurricanes took the early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. A double to left center field off the bat of Danny Valencia, gave Miami the 2-0 advantage. Valencia finished with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. The Hurricanes would score again in the sixth making it a final 3-0.
Even with hits off the bats of Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa./Bradford), Jimmy Mayer (Somerset, Pa./Somerset), Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), and Mike Megale (Stamford, C.T./Stamford), the Panthers fell short of scoring any runs. The Miami defense turned five double plays in the game.
Pittsburgh?s starter Billy Muldowney (West Chester Pa./West Chester East), who pitched seven innings, suffered his first loss on the season giving him a 0-1 record. Muldowney threw 112 pitches before being taken out of the game and struck out 10 Hurricanes in the loss, which are the most strikeouts against the Miami offense by a single pitcher so far this year.
Miami?s Ricky Orta picked up the win and improved his record to 3-1. Danny Gil got his third save of the season for the Hurricanes.
The Panthers are back in action on Friday March 11, as they take on Temple with the first pitch set for 2:00 PM.
NOTES: Pittsburgh committed three costly errors, while Miami had one...the Panthers left four men on base and Miami left six.
