Panthers Take Both in Doubleheader Against West Virginia

In the first game, West Virginia got an early lead as they scored five runs off just five hits in the first three innings. These would be the only five runs the Mountaineers could score as the Panthers came back to win it 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh.
Dan Williams led of the bottom of the third with a single through the right side and would eventually score as Jimmy Mayer grounded into a double play putting the Panthers on the board.
In the fifth, Pittsburgh scored two more runs making it a 5-3 game. After Daniel Ford walked to reach base, he then scored as David Cline lined a triple to right center field. Ben Copeland then contributed with a sacrfice fly to center scoring Cline.
After picking up another run in the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers went into the bottom of the seventh still trailing 5-4. With two outs in the inning, Mayer kept things alive with a single to the shortstop. Jim Negrych then doubled to right putting Mayer in scoring position. West Virginia made a pitching change as Peter Parise stepped to the plate. Parise then lined a single up the middle to score both Mayer and Negrych, giving the Panthers the 6-5 victory.
Muldowney, who pitched all seven innings for Pittsburgh, struck out eleven Mountaineers while walking just two. He improves overall record to 4-2 on the year.
West Virginia?s Marty Fagler suffered the loss on the mound, leaving him with a record of 4-2.
In the second game, Pittsburgh?s bats continued to back their pitching as they shutout the Mountaineers 11-0.
Singles off the bats of Copeland, Mayer, and Parise, got things started early in the first inning as the Panthers took the 2-0 lead. They would then score one run in both the third and fifth innings leaving them with the 4-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Pitt broke the game open by scoring four more runs. Sean Conley led off with a bunt single and then advanced to third on a Ford double to left field. Conley would then score as Williams singled to left. Cline kept things going as he doubled through the left side to score Ford. Both Williams and Cline would then score on a Copeland singled to right, making it a 8-0 game.
The Panthers topped things off by scoring one more run in the sixth and two more in the seventh and going on to win it 11-0.
Brant, who improved his overall record to 4-1, struck out a career high twelve batters, allowing just six hits and walking just one Mountaineer in nine innings.
Osbourn picked up the loss for West Virginia on the mound, dropping his record to 5-3.
Pittsburgh and West Virginia finish up their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at Trees Field. The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
