Baseball Splits Doubleheader with UConn
4/9/2005
STORRS, CONN.
Both teams scored early in the first game as Connecticut put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Austin Wasserman, Tony Mallozzi, Bryan Maler and Larry Day each contributed with hits for the Huskies, giving them a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers answered back in the top of the second as they scored three runs to tie the game. A costly error by UConn shortshop, Dennis Donovan, put Peter Parise on base to lead things off. Sean Conley then singled to left field and both Parise and Conley scored on a Dan Ford single to center. The third run was plated as Jeff Stevens scored on a David Cline ground out to first base.
Connecticut?s four other runs were not enough to defeat the Panthers. Pittsburgh?s offense was led by sophomore Jim Negrych who finished the game with two runs, two hits and two RBIs.
Conley contributed with three hits and one RBI and Justin Cicatello also finished with two hits in the game, including a RBI single in the top of the fourth to score Cline.
Pittsburgh starter Billy Muldowney picked up his second win on the season, improving his overall record to 2-2. Eli Friedman came in to get the save for the Panthers, his first of the year. Friedman pitched 1.2 innings, allowing no runs, hits or walks and striking out one Huskie.
A pitching dual between Pittsburgh?s Paul Nardozzi and UConn?s Rich Sirois, limited the runs for both teams as Pitt lost 2-1 in the second game.
Sirois, who pitched eight innings and allowed only one run, brought the Panthers' offense to a halt. Despite Pittsburgh?s nine hits in the game, they could only score one run in the top of the sixth. Ted Garry, who closed the game for the Huskies, got his third save on the year.
Negrych and Parise each finished with two hits in the game.
Nardozzi put up a good fight pitching eight innings, allowing just two runs and striking out eight Huskies.
