Baseball Falls to Notre Dame 21-1 in Series Finale

The Panthers face Duquesne and Youngstown State this week before traveling to Georgetown on Thursday.

PITTSBURGH ? The Pitt defense gave up twenty-one runs on eighteen hits as they dropped a 21-1 decision in their series finale with Notre Dame on Monday afternoon at Trees Field. The Panthers (27-19, 12-10) will play two non-conference games this week before traveling to Georgetown this weekend for a Big East three-game series.
Notre Dame (29-21-1, 11-9-1) got on the board early as Craig Cooper led off with a solo home run in the first inning against Pittsburgh starter Shaun Butler, giving the Irish a 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers plated their only run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game when Ben Copeland scored as Peter Parise reached base on a fielder?s choice.
The Irish would knock in twenty additional runs in the game to give them the 21-1 victory over Pittsburgh. Craig Cooper led the Notre Dame offense going 3-for-5 including two homers, four runs scored and five RBI. Cody Rizzo and Ross Brezovsky also homered in the game for the Irish.
Notre Dame?s Jeff Samardzija improved his record to 6-1 on the season as he got the win for the Irish. Samardzija threw for six innings allowing only one run on three hits.
Pitt?s Butler suffered the loss on the mound for the Panthers, leaving him with a record of 3-5 on the year. Butler pitched just two innings, allowing five runs on six hits. Pittsburgh?s Jeff Barnyak threw for three innings giving up eleven runs on seven hits and Adam Luckette pitched two other innings, allowing five runs on five hits.
The Panthers will play their two remaining home games this Tuesday and Wednesday against Duquesne and Youngstown State. The game on Tuesday against Duquesne will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Trees Field.
