Panthers Drop 5-1 Decision To Duquesne

Pittsburgh will face Youngstown State in their last home game at Trees Field on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

PITTSBURGH ? The Panthers managed just one run and four hits off Duquesne starting hurler Jon Smith in their 5-1 loss to the Dukes on Tuesday night at Trees Field. Pitt drops their overall record to 27-20 as Duquesne improves to 18-31 on the year.

After the Dukes took an early 2-0 lead, the Panthers scored their only run in the bottom of the second inning. Peter Parise led off with a double through the left side but then was thrown out at home as Edgard Sucre singled to right field. Sucre would later score as David Cline singled to center, making it a 2-1 game.

Duquesne?s offense had 14 hits off Pitt?s pitching squad as starter Don Rhoten suffered the loss on the mound for the Panthers. Rhoten pitched two innings, allowing two runs and two hits. Pittsburgh?s Paul Nardozzi then threw two frames, giving up no hits or runs. Andrew Kuss, who came in for Nardozzi, pitched three innings allowing five hits and one run, and Eli Friedman worked through the final two innings, giving up four hits and two runs.

Despite their efforts, Pitt was unable to plate any more runs in the remaining of the game, as the Dukes went on to win it 5-1.

Smith, now 1-1 on the year, pitched the entire game for the Dukes. Smith gave up four hits and just one run while striking out three Panthers in the win.

Pittsburgh?s Jimmy Mayer, Parise, Sucre and Cline each had a hit in the game for the Panthers.

The Pittsburgh Panthers will play their final home game of the 2005 season on Wednesday, May 18 at 3:00 p.m. as they take on the Youngstown State Penguins at Trees Field. Pitt will then travel to Georgetown on Thursday and Friday for more Big East action. They will face the Hoyas in a doubleheader on Thursday night starting at 5 p.m. and conclude the series with a single game on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.

NOTES: Each team had one error in the game?Pitt?s Jimmy Mayer picked up his 9^th stolen base on the year and David Cline got his 16^th?Peter Parise got his 9^th double for the season (tied for 3^rd highest on the team).
