Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) was a Freshman All-American selection last season by Baseball America and is one of only two Big East players on this year?s first-team squad. St. John?s relief pitcher Craig Hansen was also named to the first team by the publication.
A first-team All-Big East selection in 2005, Negrych led Pitt in home runs (16), RBIs (59), on-base percentage (.471) and walks (44, single-season school record). He also had 14 doubles, 52 runs scored and a .694 slugging percentage. In league action, Negrych led the squad with a .385 batting average to go along with eight home runs and 25 RBIs.
The 2005 Big East Preseason Player of the Year, Negrych led the Panthers to their school-record fourth straight 30-win season and their first trip to the Big East Tournament final since 1995. In the conference tourney, he catapulted Pitt to the championship game with a memorable performance in the 3-2, 12-inning victory over Boston College. After earlier hitting a solo home run against the Eagles, Negrych came through with a two-out, two-run homer that carried over 430-feet to center field, giving the Panthers the dramatic victory.
