Robert Brant Enjoying Impressive Start to Summer Baseball League

PITTSBURGH - After an impressive freshman season this past year, Pitt standout hurler Robert Brant is continuing his pitching dominance while playing this summer for the Keene Swamp Bats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Brant (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield) owns a perfect 2-0 record in two starts for the Swamp Bats, which has a NECBL-leading 9-1 record on the year. He has surrendered just three hits in 14.0 innings pitched while striking out 19 batters. Brant has yet to give up a run and opponents are batting a dismal .077 against him on the year.

In his first start of the summer, he combined for a shutout in Keene's 4-0 victory over the Sanford Mainers. He pitched seven innings, allowing one hit and no runs while mowing down 10 batters. Brant also picked up the victory in the Swamp Bats' 3-1 win against the Mill City All-Americans. He worked seven innings, striking out nine batters and allowing two hits and no runs.

In his freshman season at Pitt, the left-handed Brant was named a Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American by Collegiate. He also earned second-team All-Big East honors, becoming the first rookie pitcher in school history to garner all-league honors. Brant finished the year with a 2.07 earned run average and a 7-2 record. His seven wins tied a Pitt freshen record, initially set by Aaron Krause in 1981.

Named Big East Pitcher of the Week on May 2, Brant ranked second in the conference in ERA and led all conference freshmen in wins (7), strikeouts (68), shutouts (1), opponents' batting average (.210) and complete games (2). In league games, he was even more impressive, finishing with a 4-1 mark and a 1.56 ERA.
