In his freshman season at Pitt, the left-handed Brant was named a Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American by Collegiate. He also earned second-team All-Big East honors, becoming the first rookie pitcher in school history to garner all-league honors. Brant finished the year with a 2.07 earned run average and a 7-2 record. His seven wins tied a Pitt freshen record, initially set by Aaron Krause in 1981.
Named Big East Pitcher of the Week on May 2, Brant ranked second in the conference in ERA and led all conference freshmen in wins (7), strikeouts (68), shutouts (1), opponents' batting average (.210) and complete games (2). In league games, he was even more impressive, finishing with a 4-1 mark and a 1.56 ERA.
