PITTSBURGH?Pitt standout freshman pitcher Robert Brant has been named a Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American, as chosen by Collegiate Baseball today. Brant is the second Panther in as many years to be named a Freshmen All-American after second baseman Jim Negrych earned the same honor last season. Brant (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield), a rookie southpaw, finished the season with a 7-2 record and team-best 2.07 earned run average. His seven wins tied the school freshman record set by Aaron Krause in 1981. Brant struck out 68 batters and walked 23 in 61.0 innings pitched. A second-team All-Big East selection, Brant became Pitt?s first rookie pitcher in school history to earn all-league honors. In conference action, he owned an impressive 4-1 record with a 1.56 ERA while limiting the opposition to a dismal .192 batting average. Brant led all Big East freshmen in wins, strikeouts, shutouts and complete games and was named Big East Pitcher of the Week on May 2. Brant helped the Panthers to their second consecutive Big East Tournament appearance and fourth straight 30-win season. In the conference tourney, Brant pitched 7.0 innings and scattered six hits as Pitt knocked off No. 23 and top-seeded St. John?s in the opening round. He struck out seven batters and surrendered just one run in the 4-1 victory.
