7/12/2005
PITTSBURGH?Pitt senior swimmer Darryl Washington competed in the U.S. World Swimming Championship Trials earlier this year and set a personal lifetime best in both the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
The meet featured many of the top swimmers in the United States, including 2004 Olympic champions from the Athens games. The top finishers qualified for the World Championships, held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and the World University Games in Izmar, Turkey.
While competing in the 50 freestyle, Washington (Aldan, Pa./Penn Wood) set a personal lifetime best with a time of 23.76 seconds in the prelims, placing 22nd and moving him into the consolation finals. With a time of 23.78 seconds in the finals, he finished 24th in the event. It was Washington's second appearance in the Nationals and first trip to the finals. In the 100-meter freestyle, Washington finished in 40th place with another lifetime-best mark of 52.47 seconds.
"Swimming in the World Championship Trials is a tremendous honor and I had some competitive swims against the best in the country," Washington said. "I learned a lot during the trials and am going to use that to prepare for my senior season at Pitt."
"Darryl had three outstanding performances in his two days of swimming," said assistant coach Eric Stefanski, who joined Washington at the Trials in Indianapolis. "He showed confidence and determination to succeed at such a high level of competition. I think Darryl took a major step in his swimming career by learning where he can be as an athlete."
Washington won two Big East titles this past season, in the 50 freestyle and as part of the 200 freestyle relay team, and earned a total of four All-Big East honors.
