PISCATAWAY, N.J.-Rutgers saw its offense come alive as it registered a 4-1 victory over visiting Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. Rutgers improves to 2-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big East while Pitt drops to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Big East.
The contest was broadcast on the Comcast Network (CN8-TV).
After scoring just two goals in its pervious five games, RU struck first in opening minutes as sophomore Kevin O'Connor gathered a pass from Zach Simi and beat Pittsburgh goalie Andy Jorgensen to the upper left corner of the goal.
The Rutgers defense then settled in, led by junior goalie Lubos Ancin. Ancin made two first-half saves and finished with five on the afternoon. Leading 1-0 in the final stages of the first half, Adam Sternberger scored from seven yards out after receiving a pass from Simi to give the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute.
With a two-goal cushion in the 72nd minute, the Rutgers put the game out of reach with a third goal. Nick LaBrocca netted his first goal of the season on a 35-yard direct kick, and sophomore Chris Moore followed with his first collegiate points on a ball to the lower left corner of the goal in the 73rd minute.
RU held a 20-10 advantage in shots (11-5 in the first half, 9-5 in the second half).
Pitt's Eric Jaeger closed out the scoring when he poked a shot past Ancin in the 79th minute on a free kick. It was Jaeger's first career goal.
