PITTSBURGH-The Pitt men's soccer team defeated Marquette 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Founders Field. Three players contributed their first career goals in the win as the Panthers moved to 4-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the Big East while the Golden Eagles fell to 1-10-1 and 0-7-0 in the Big East.
Senior midfielder Mike Cunha (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) started things off for Pitt in the eighth minute as he capitalized off a penalty kick to score his first career goal and put the Panthers up1-0.
It was Matt Langton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) striking less than a minute later at 9:08. Langton received a feed from teammate Matt Baker (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem) on a fast break downfield as he sliced the ball to the left past Marquette goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski for his first career goal, giving Pitt an early 2-0 lead.
Late in the first half, yet another first career goal was scored by freshman Oran Gordon (Kingston, Jamaica) when he put the final tally on the board for the Panthers. At 43:21, forward Chris Bastidas (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua/Wake Forest) found Gordon in front of the net, who knocked the ball in for the final score of 3-0.
Pitt goalkeeper Andy Jorgensen (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East/Elizabethtown) captured his fourth shutout of the season, finishing with two saves. This win moved his season record to 3-2-2. The Panther defense held the Golden Eagles to just four shots on the day, two on goal, while Pitt racked up six shots with three on goal.
The Panthers have two games on the road before returning home to Founders Field on Wednesday, Oct. 11, for a 7 p.m. match up with Bowling Green. Pitt will travel to West Virginia on Wednesday, Oct. 4, to take on the Mountaineers at 7 p.m. and then head to Providence on Saturday, Oct. 7, for a 1 p.m. match up.
