
PITT VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS WEST VIRGINIA 3-0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Pitt volleyball team earned its third consecutive Big East win with a 3-0 victory at West Virginia tonight. The Panthers (16-6, 5-2 Big East) played two close games against the Mountaineers (2-20, 1-6 Big East) before holding them to only 22 points in the final game. Pitt hit .172 compared to West Virginia's .065 and recorded 11.5 blocks to the Mountaineers' five.
Junior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the Panthers with 15 kills and 13 digs for a double-double. She additionally had four blocks and contributed 18 points for Pitt's win. Freshman outside hitter Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 14 kills and a .357 hitting percentage. She also had two blocks and 15 points.
Senior Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) put up 44 assists and 10 digs for a double-double. She had four blocks and six points. Libero Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua) had her first career kill and also had nine digs against West Virginia.
Defensively, the team was led by sophomore Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) who tied her career high of two block solos. With five block assists, Moses had seven total blocks and also five kills for 9.5 points. Freshman Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) had four blocks and four kills for six points.
In game one, both teams rallied for the lead with Pitt pulling ahead, 10-8, after a kill from Kern. A block from Dooley, Andreyko and Kern moved them ahead by three. The Mountaineers came back to tie it up at 14 after a service error from the Panthers, and West Virginia moved ahead by two, 16-14. While both teams fought for control, the Mountaineers stayed in the lead until Pitt tied the game up at 26 after a kill by Boroumand. The Panthers stayed ahead for the remainder of the game. A kill from Andreyko set Pitt up for the game point, and the Panthers won, 31-29, after an attack error by West Virginia. Andreyko and Dooley had six kills each. Boroumand put up 17 assists, and Moses had four blocks. The Panthers hit .227 to the Mountaineers' .214.
West Virginia started game two in the lead, getting off to a 9-5 start. The Panthers came back to tie the game up at 12 after a kill from Andreyko. Pitt moved ahead, 17-13, with a service ace by Boroumand. West Virginia fought back and tied the game at 20 after an attack error by the Panthers. But Pitt pulled ahead at 26 with a service ace from Andreyko. Rossi's first career kill won the game for Pitt, 30-27. Andreyko had eight kills and five digs. Boroumand put up 16 assists, and Kern recorded two block assists. Pitt hit .140 to West Virginia's .026.
Game three went back and forth until Pitt moved into the lead, 17-13, after an attack error by the Mountaineers. West Virginia wasn't able to catch up in this game as Pitt took an eight-point lead, 28-20, with a kill from Ross. A kill from Moses set up the Panthers for the win, and a kill by Boroumand clinched game three, 30-22. Dooley had five kills, and Boroumand recorded 11 assists. Moses put up three blocks. Pitt hit .146 to West Virginia's -.045.
The Panthers will play their next two games on the road as well, taking on Marquette on Friday, Oct. 20. The team will then travel to Syracuse for a match on Sunday, Oct. 22. The Panthers return to the Fitzgerald Field House on Friday, Oct. 27 for a non-conference match against Long Island.
