PITT VOLLEYBALL WINS AT HOME AGAINST LONG ISLAND

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt volleyball team returned to the Field House this evening for a non-conference match against Long Island. The Panthers (18-7, 6-3 Big East) defeated the Blackbirds (17-10, 4-0 NEC) three wins to one. Pitt was more accurate in its hitting percentage, finishing at .166 compared to Long Island's .082, and the Panthers put up 15 blocks to the Blackbird's seven.
Junior outside hitter Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded a double-double against Long Island with 12 kills and 11 digs. She additionally put up four blocks while hitting .212. Sophomore Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) led the team with 18 kills. She also had eight digs and two blocks while hitting .156. Freshman Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) contributed ten kills and led the team with seven blocks.
Senior Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Albertga/Thurber) had the team's other double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs. She additionally had seven kills, hitting .667 against Long Island. Sophomore Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) recorded six blocks and had three kills while freshman Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) put up four blocks and had five putaways. Freshman libero Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) had a career-high five assists and also contributed 16 digs.
The Blackbirds started out with a 5-0 lead in game one. An attack error from Long Island tied the game up for the Panthers at seven. The Blackbirds took control from there, moving ahead, 12-9. Pitt went on a three-point run to tie it up again. A kill from Ross put the Panthers ahead, 15-14, and a service ace from Andreyko gave Pitt a two-point lead. Boroumand scored on a putaway to give Pitt a 23-17 lead. A net violation by the Blackbirds set the Panthers up for the game point. Long Island's attack error gave Pitt the game one win, 30-20. Ross led with five kills, and Boroumand put up 13 assists. Andreyko and Kern had two blocks each. Pitt hit .143 compared to Long Island's -.042. Both teams had four blocks each.
Pitt started with a three-point lead in game two after a block by Andreyko and Moses. The Blackbirds tied it up at four, but Pitt fought back, gaining a two-point lead after a kill from Ross. Long Island pulled ahead, 12-10, and they took a five-point lead at 18. The Blackbirds went on to win game two, 30-19. Andreyko led the Panthers with three kills. Boroumand contributed seven assists, and Andreyko and Moses had one block each. Pitt hit .000 compared to Long Island's .371.
The Panthers took a three-point lead in game three after a block from Dooley. Ross scored on a kill to give the Panthers a 5-1 advantage. Ross and Moses put up a block, and Pitt moved ahead, 9-1. Ross scored on another block to increase the Panthers' lead, 16-4. A kill from Dooley kept Pitt's momentum going, moving them ahead, 23-16. Moses had a kill to set the Panthers up for the game point. A kill from Ross won game three for the Panthers, 30-20. Ross had six kills, and Boroumand had 10 assists. Moses put up five blocks. Pitt hit .147 compared to Long Island's -.049 and put up eight blocks to one.
The two teams battled for the lead in game four, and it was Long Island that pulled ahead, 10-8. Pitt tried to close in several times, but the Blackbirds continued to take a two-point lead. The Panthers fought back to tie it up at 17, and an attack error by Long Island gave Pitt the lead. Kern scored on a kill to put Pitt up, 22-18. Long Island had an attack error to set Pitt up for the match point, and another error gave Pitt the game four win, 30-23. Ross led the Panthers with six kills, hitting .500. Boroumand had 10 assists, and three Panthers had one block each. Pitt hit. 318 while Long Island hit .109. The Panthers had two blocks to one.
The Panthers will head to Seton Hall for a match on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. They'll return to Pittsburgh next weekend for league matches against Cincinnati and Louisville. The match against the Cardinals will be Pitt's final home contest of the season.
NOTES - Sophomore Monica Macellari (Granger, Ind./S.B. Clay) tied her career high of one assist, and Ross tied her career high of one solo block.
