SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Pitt volleyball team earned another conference win today in a three-game sweep over Seton Hall. The Panthers (19-7, 7-3 Big East) held the Pirates (14-12, 3-7 Big East) to less than 25 points in two of the three games. Pitt hit .302 compared to Seton Hall's .107 and had 19 blocks to four.
Freshman Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) played a tough match offensively and defensively, leading the team with 12 kills while also putting up seven blocks. She contributed 16.5 points for the Panthers' win and hit .375. Junior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) had 10 putaways with a .250 hitting percentage. She additionally had nine digs and four blocks.
Freshman Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) tied the school record of nine block assists in a three-game match. She joins teammate Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) and former Panther Michele Adamson on the leaderboard. Kern also had four kills, contributing 8.5 points. Moses had eight blocks against the Pirates along with four putaways for 9.5 points.
Senior Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) hit .818 against Seton Hall and recorded 34 assists and nine kills. She also had five blocks and 12 points. Junior Melissa Ferguson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) tied her career high of one assist.
Game one started with both teams fighting for the lead, and Dooley went on a three-point run to move Pitt ahead. She scored on a block assist with Kern, a kill and then a service ace to give Pitt a 7-6 lead. The Panthers moved ahead, 9-6, after a block and a kill. Pitt went on a four-point scoring drive halfway through game one to move them ahead, 16-9. The defensive combination of Dooley and Moses secured Pitt's lead late in the game, and a block from the duo won game one, 30-18. Pitt hit .438 compared to Seton Hall's .026. Dooley recorded five putaways for a .714 hitting percentage. Boroumand put up 14 assists. Moses and Dooley had five blocks each.
Pitt got off to a solid lead in game two, moving ahead 12-6 after a block by Boroumand. Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) scored on a kill to give the Panthers a nine-point lead at 24-15. The Pirates tried to close in, going on a four-point scoring drive, but the Panthers were able to hold them off. A kill from Boroumand set Pitt up for the game point, and a kill from Andreyko won game two, 30-23. Pitt hit .286 compared to Seton Hall's .136. Boroumand led the Panthers with four kills and also had nine assists. She hit .800 against the Pirates. Three Panthers had two blocks each.
In game three, Seton Hall took the lead, 10-7, but Pitt came back to tie it up at 11 after an error by the Pirates. The Panthers took control of the game from there, never letting Seton Hall tie it up. A block from Kern and Boroumand set Pitt up for the game point, and a kill from Boroumand won it, 30-26. Pitt hit .214 compared to Seton Hall's .150. Dooley led the team with five kills. Boroumand put up 11 assists, and Kern recorded four blocks.
The Panthers will return to Pittsburgh next week to conclude their home season. They'll play Cincinnati on Friday and Louisville on Sunday. The game against the Cardinals will also be "Senior Recognition" in which the team will honor Boroumand.
