PROVIDENCE, R.I-The Pitt men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to Big East opponent Providence Saturday afternoon at Glay Field. The Panthers are now 4-7-2 on the season and 3-3-1 in the Big East, while Friars improved to 9-3 and 5-3 in the conference.
After Pitt's game with West Virginia was postponed on Wednesday due to inclement weather conditions, the Panthers headed to Providence for their first game of the week. Pitt was coming off a 3-0 victory against conference opponent Marquette.
The Panthers struck early when sophomore forward E.J. McCormick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) notched his second goal of the season. Teammates Matt Baker (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem) and Matt Langton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) moved the ball down field, passing it off to McCormick in front of the Friar net.
McCormick's initial shot bounced off the right goal post and back onto the field of play. Rebounding his own ball, McCormick launched it into an open net giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of play.
Pitt goal keeper Andy Jorgensen (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East/Elizabethtown) and the Panther defense held strong until the 64th minute when Friar freshman forward Jonathan Medcalf scored, tying the game at 1-1. Teammate Hadrien Toure passed the ball off to Medcalf who shot it from five yards out for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The score remained tied at 1-1 through regulation but in the 95th minute of play, Providence midfielder Alex Bury tallied the game-winning goal. On an unassisted volley, Bury buried a shot from 20 yards out to give the Friars the 2-1 win.
Pitt returns to Founders Field on Wednesday, Oct. 11, for the start of a three-game home stand. The Panthers will take on Bowling Green on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before hosting Big East conference opponents Connecticut and Georgetown. The Huskies will visit on Saturday, Oct. 14, while Pitt's final home game of the season will be against the Hoyas on Wednesday Oct. 18.
