SOUTH BEND, Ind.- Captains Kristin Brown and Andrea Shoust combined to earn four of the five Pitt first-place finishes, as the women's swimming and diving team fell to Big East rival Notre Dame, 188-112, this afternoon. The Panthers slip to 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Bermundian Springs) earned three first-place finishes, winning all three of the individual events she competed in. Brown won the 100 free (51.43), 200 free (1:49.31) and the 500 free (4:57.07).
Brown's 100 and 200 free time were both season-bests and well under the mark for Big East qualifying times.
Shoust's (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./White Pines C & VS) first-place finish was in the 200 back, where she recorded a season-best time of 2:02.55.
The Panthers fifth first-place finish of the day was earned by junior Brittany Stevens (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr Mill's/Florida State) in the 100 fly when she stopped the clock at 57.12.
The 200 medley relay team of Shoust, sophomore Ruth Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa/Garnet Valley), Stevens and freshman Stacie Safritt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) combined to record a second-place finish when they touched the wall at 1:45.12.
Pitt second relay of the day also finished second, as Brown, Shoust, Safritt and freshman Lisa McDonnell (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) combined on the 200 free relay that finished at 1:35.33.
Seiffert recorded individual second-place finishes in the 100 breast (1:06.07) and the 200 breast (2:20.97).
Later, McDonnell and junior Kelly O'Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek) tied for second in the 50 free with a time of 24.61, while sophomore Agnes Mago (Kecskemet, Hungary/Bolyai Janos/Radford) was second in the 500 free (4:59.65).
Finishing with third-place times on the day were: Mago in the 400 IM (4:27.47), McDonnell in the 100 fly (58.74) and Safritt in the 100 free (52.44).
In diving action, freshmen Margo Ekstrom (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Hanna Bratton (Lincoln, R.I./Moses Brown School) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, on the 1M boards. They both slipped one spot on the 3M board.
The Panthers travel to New Jersey on Dec. 1. The swimmers will compete in the three-day Princeton Invitational, while the divers participate in the Rutgers Diving Invitational during the same three days.
