PITTSBURGH - Pitt redshirt junior Drew Headlee was named EWL Wrestler of the Week after capturing the Cornell Body Bar tournament title at 133 pounds last weekend. With a 5-0 record this season, he has collected two falls.
A 2005 NCAA All-America selection, Headlee (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) redshirted last season but has returned ready to battle for the Panthers this year. He opened the 2006 season with a dual match win against Rider and a pin at the 6:24 mark.
Headlee went 4-0 at the Body Bar tournament, opening up the competition with a fall against Drexel's Morgan Remillard at the 1:25 mark. He then won a 5-2 decision against Kent State's Clayton Stark. In his third bout, Headlee won an 8-7 decision over William Simpson of Army. Finally, in the championship bout he defeated Army's Matt Kyler by a 2-1 decision.
This marks the second tournament victory of Headlee's career as he also won the Mat Town Invitational as a freshman. He was an NCAA qualifier in 2005 and went on to finish eighth at the national championships that season. Headlee holds a 43-18 career record.
Headlee and the Panthers will open their home and conference slate on Wednesday evening when they take on Bloomsburg at 7 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Field House.
