PITTSBURGH - Pitt junior cornerback Darrelle Revis has been named one of 11 semifinalists for the 2006 Jim Thorpe Award, annually presented to the nation's top defensive back. The semifinalists were announced today by the Jim Thorpe Association.
Revis (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) is one of the elite cornerbacks in all of college football. Earlier this season he became the first player in Pitt history to return interceptions for touchdowns in back-to-back games with a 19-yard return vs. Virginia and a 57-yard return at Cincinnati. Revis is also a tenacious run defender and has 28 tackles, including four for losses.
With Revis anchoring the secondary, Pitt boasts the nation's No. 13 scoring defense (15 ppg.), No. 20 pass defense (164.1 yards/game) and No. 22 pass efficiency defense (107.88 rating).
The list of semifinalists for this year's Thorpe Award will be trimmed to three finalists on Nov. 20. Each finalist will be invited to ESPN's College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 7 in Orlando, Fla., where the winner will be announced. An official presentation will be made at a formal banquet in Oklahoma City on Feb. 12, 2007.
Pitt (6-3, 2-2 Big East) will play at Connecticut (3-5, 0-3) in a key conference game this Saturday, Nov. 11. The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m., and be televised in Pittsburgh on WTAE-TV, channel 4.
