GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Panthers had two placewinners at this week's Southern Scuffle tournament as Drew Headlee finished fifth at 133 pounds, and Zach Sheaffer placed seventh at heavyweight. The No. 24 Pitt wrestling team finished 20th in the 32-team tournament.
Headlee (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) entered the tournament as a No. 3 seed and picked up two wins yesterday. In today's quarterfinals, Headlee lost a 10-2 major decision to Virginia's Eric Albright. He went on to pin Edinboro's Kyle Fluke in the quarterfinals at the 1:20 mark. Headlee then went up against Lehigh's Seth Ciasulli, a wrestler he had lost to in this year's dual meet. But this time around, Headlee won a 7-0 decision to advance to the consolation semifinals. There he lost a 6-3 decision to Navy's Joe Baker. In the bout for fifth place, he pinned Edinboro's Ricky Deubel at the 2:32 mark.
Sheaffer (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) picked up three victories today as the No. 14 seed. He won his first match by pinning Eric Parker of Cal State-Bakersfield at the 1:23 mark. Sheaffer then went on to win a 4-0 decision over Joe Fendone of Edinboro. He then lost a 0-4 decision to NC State's Janoir Palma. In the match for seventh place, Sheaffer defeated Navy's Scott Steele with a 4-2 decision.
Joey Ecklof (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), the No. 11 seed, also advanced to today's quarterfinals where he lost an 8-0 major decision to Jordan Leen of Cornell. He then went on to lose a 7-5 decision to Navy's John Cox in consolations, finishing the tournament with a 2-2 record.
