PITTSBURGH - Three key members of the Pitt baseball team were recognized by the Big East Conference as All-Big East honorees for the 2006 season. Juniors Jim Negrych, Billy Muldowney and Peter Parise earned First Team, Second Team and Third Team honors, respectively.
Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) earned his third consecutive All-Big East honor and second straight mention on the First Team. He was also a Second-Team honoree in 2004. Among the Big East and national leaders in batting average (.396) and RBIs (60), Negrych is projected as an early-round selection in the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft in June. He is also one of 16 semifinalists for the prestigious Dick Howser Trophy, awarded to the top collegiate baseball player.
Muldowney (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East/Duke) earned his second straight Second-Team honor with a 5-4 record and 3.16 ERA in 2006. In 82.2 innings pitched, Muldowney struck out 99 batters - the third most in Panther history. In just two seasons with the Panthers, he is ranked second all-time in strikeouts with 188.
Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) is a first-time honoree, earning All-Big East Third Team plaudits. He started 48 games in the outfield and hit .314 for the year with 13 doubles, four home runs, 31 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. His averaged raised to .324 in conference action with three of his home runs.
It is the fifth consecutive season under Pitt head coach Joe Jordano that the Panthers have had at least three All-Big East honorees.
