SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Two members of the Pitt women's track and field team competed in today's qualifiers of the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Hosted by Sacramento State, the competition continues through Saturday at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex on the University's campus.
Senior Maureen McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) will chase her third All-American distinction on Friday after qualifying for the finals in the 5,000 meters. She finished seventh today with a time of 16:10.02. McCandless currently holds the school record at 16:01.30 and finished third in this event at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships. She'll compete at 10 p.m. EST on Friday.
Also competing today was sophomore Shantea Calhoun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross). Calhoun is a two-time NCAA outdoor qualifier, and this year she competed in the 200 meters. In today's preliminary rounds, she placed 20th with a time of 23.82. Only the top 18 advance to the semifinals, and the last competitor to qualify ran for a time of 23.54. Calhoun has had quite a successful season with a school record in the 100 meters and a conference title in the 400-meter relay.
Competing tomorrow will be senior Marissa Dudek (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) in the pole vault and Julianna Reed (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) in the 400-meter hurdles.
