PITTSBURGH - Just two weeks into fall practice, Pitt head coach Joe Jordano likes what he sees from his team. With a week of good weather, the team was able to participate in three inter-squad scrimmages, enabling the coaching staff to evaluate where the team stands to date.
"We have had a solid week of practice," Jordano said. "Our objective is to keep pushing the team and find our limits. There is a fine line between being comfortable and being complacent and that is the job we have in front of us. Complacency is an unwelcome ingredient on the road to success."
With nearly as many newcomers as veterans on the team, the Panthers are finding new challenges and learning the concept of teaching and how to step up and be a leader.
"When you have 12-to-13 new players on the team, you run into some bumps in the road," Jordano stated. "We have been teaching a lot, but on the other side, it is refreshing when a new player steps up and becomes the type of player we expect from our returners. When that happens, it creates a higher level of competition."
A typical week for the Panthers includes an inter-squad game Monday, Wednesday and Friday and team defense and skill work on Thursday and Sunday. The players also incorporate a strength and conditioning regimen prior to morning classes, led by strength and conditioning coach Tim Beltz.
Fall practice continues through Oct. 20 with weekly updates on www.pittsburghpanthers.com.
