
CLEVELAND STATE GIVES PANTHERS FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS OF THE SEASON

PITTSBURGH - The Panthers came into tonight's dual meet undefeated in the EWL conference. Up against Cleveland State (8-2, 1-0 EWL), Pitt fell in its second league match up, 21-15. The Panthers (5-4, 1-1 EWL) picked up wins at 133, 165, 174 and 285 pounds. Two Panthers scored bonus points for the team.
Up first at 125 pounds, Pitt's Brad Gentzle (Easton, Pa./Easton) wrestled Cleveland State's Ryan Riggs. Gentzle came into the match with a 10-9 record, and Riggs held a 7-10 record. A takedown in the first period put Gentzle on the board first. Riggs came back with an escape, making the score 2-1 heading into the second period. The two were scoreless in the second, giving Gentzle the lead heading into the final period. Riggs had an escape early in the third to tie it up at two. With riding time, Riggs won the bout, 3-2 giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead.
Next up was No. 13 Drew Headlee (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) against Cleveland State's David Armstrong. Each wrestler had six losses entering tonight's bout. Headlee came in with 18 wins, and Armstrong had 12. In the first period, Headlee scored quickly on a takedown to take the lead. He scored two more back points to move ahead, 4-0. A three-point near fall in the second period put him up, 9-0. An escape in the third and riding time gave Headlee the 11-0 major decision. This pushed the Panthers into the lead, 4-3.
At 141 pounds, Pitt's Joe Ciampoli (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) took on Cleveland State's Mike Hurley. Ciampoli entered with a 10-9 record while Hurley came in at 15-7. In the first period, Hurley jumped to a 9-3 lead, scoring on two takedowns, a reversal and near fall. Ciampoli came back in the second with a reversal to close Hurley's lead to four points. Hurley had a reversal in the final period and went on to win the bout, 11-5. Cleveland State moved back into the lead, 6-4.
Pitt's Mark Generalovich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) faced Cleveland State's Ryan Hurley at 149 pounds. Hurley entered the bout with 20 wins to Generalovich's two. In the first period, Hurley scored immediately on a takedown, and Generalovich came back with an escape, making the score 2-1 heading into the second. Generalovich scored on an escape to tie it up, but Hurley had a takedown, putting him up 4-2 heading into the third period. In the final period, Hurley scored on several takedowns for a 12-2 major decision. The Vikings kept the lead, 10-4.
No. 8 Matt Kocher (State College, Pa./State College) wrestled Cleveland State's Victer Crenshaw in the 157-pound bout. Kocher came into the match undefeated in duals this season with a 17-3 record. Crenshaw entered at 22-5. In the first period, Crenshaw scored on an early takedown, and Kocher came back with an escape, making the score 2-1. Kocher tied it up at two with an escape in the second. He moved ahead, 4-2, with a takedown. A reversal from Crenshaw tied it up at four with one period to go. He scored three more in the final period on an escape and takedown to win the match, 7-4. Cleveland State kept a 13-4 lead.
At 165 pounds, Pitt's Sean Richmond (Emmaus, Pa./Easton) took on Cleveland State's Marcus Effner. Richmond entered the bout, 16-10, while Effner came in at 18-12. Richmond scored two points on a takedown for the lead at the end of the first period. He had another takedown in the second and held Effner two only two escapes. In the final period, Richmond scored on an escape for the 5-2 win. The Vikings remained in the lead, but Pitt started to close in, 13-7.
Up next at 174 pounds was Pitt's No. 3 Keith Gavin (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) against Cleveland State's Nate Kmets. Entering the bout, Gavin held a 15-3 record, and Kmets stood at 4-15. Gavin got off to an early lead scoring two on a takedown and three back points. Another takedown gave Gavin a 7-1 lead heading into the second period. Gavin had three more takedowns and a near fall in the final period and with riding time won a 20-5 technical fall at the 7:00 mark. Cleveland State kept the lead by only one point. This technical fall was Gavin's fourth of the season.
Pitt's Kyle Deliere (Cecil, Pa./Canon-McMillan) face Cleveland State's David Gilkey at 184 pounds. Deliere came into the bout with a 5-8 record, and Gilkey entered at 14-13. Deliere scored first with two on a takedown. Gilkey came back with an escape and takedown for the 3-2 lead. The second period was scoreless. Gilkey had an escape in the third to win the bout, 4-2. The Vikings moved ahead, 16-10.
At 197 pounds, Pitt's Eric Cassidy (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) wrestled Cleveland State's Chris Hahn. Cassidy entered tonight's bout with a 7-8 record, and Hahn came in with an 8-4 record. The wrestlers were scoreless until Hahn pinned Cassidy at the 1:00 mark to lock up the dual win for the Vikings.
The final match of the evening was between Pitt's Zach Sheaffer (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Cleveland State's Rashard Goff. Both wrestlers entered the bout with 21 wins each. The two were scoreless in the first period. Sheaffer had an escape in the second to take a one-point lead. Scoreless in the second, Sheaffer won the match 1-0. Cleveland State won the dual, 22-15. The Vikings were deducted a point for unsportsmanlike conduct, making the final score 21-15.
