PITTSBURGH--The Gold team outlasted the Blue team, as the University of Pittsburgh's men's swimming and diving team held it's annual Blue-Gold meet at Trees Pool. Gold won 148-122.
The Blue team opened strong as they won the first race of the meet, the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.54. Members of the squad included freshman Alex McLaren (Victoria, B.C.), senior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton), junior Andrew Kyrejko (West Orange, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) and junior Pat Mansfield (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne).
Barnes, a senior captain, won three events on the day for Blue. First he touched the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 56.96 as he just missed the meet record of 56.06 set by junior Adam Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland/High School #VII) last year.
Later, Barnes was victorious in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.51. Gold took second in the event as junior Jonathon Buchanan (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) touched the wall at 2:19.68.
Assisting Blue in three other first-place finishes, Mansfield won the 50 free for Blue when he touched the wall at 21.88. Later Mansfield placed first in the 100 free (48.24).
Another multi-event winner from the opening race was McLaren, who won the 200 free for the Blue team with a time of 1:46.28. Touching the wall second in that event was senior Steve Jackson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) of the Gold team at 1:47.61.
Kyrejko added his name to the multi-winner list when he later won the 200 fly at 1:55.16, as Gold took second when sophomore Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) finished at 1:59.47.
But in the end of the meet, Gold won more events and held more spots in the top three. Winning the 100 back for the Gold team was freshman Andrzej Dubiel. Later he won the 200 back with a time of 1:56.44 and placed second in the 50 free (22.10).
Freshman Andrew Geissler (Westmont, N.J./Haddon) led the Gold team to another victory after he touch the wall first in the 100 fly (53.15). Morgan added more points for Gold with a second-place finish in the same event.
In the 500 free, freshman Zach Robertson-Phillips (Glen Rock, Pa.) chipped in another first-place finish for Gold with a time of 4:46.56. However, senior captain Scott Shearer (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) aided his Blue squad with second place.
Robertson-Phillips would later slightly trail senior Jared Martin (Richmond, Va./Nova) as the two swept the top two places in the 200 IM for the Gold team.
Dubiel, junior Andrew Burkey (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area), Morgan and Jackson earned the final victory in the meet with a 1:28.56 finish in the 200 free relay for the Gold team.
In 3M diving, the Gold team provided one-two punch as senior Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) finished first and freshman Jason Erdeljac (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) was second.
Later junior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) won the 1M event for Blue with a score of 210.30. Also diving for Blue, freshman Colin Forner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) trailed for second at 162.25.
