Freshmen Lead Men's Swimming And Diving In Season-Opener

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.--Pitt's freshmen led the men's swimming and diving team, as the Panthers defeated St. Bonaventure, 148-95, in their season-opener on the road.
Freshman Zach Phillips led the charge in the 1000 free with the top finish at 9:55.66. Senior Scott Shearer (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Derek Schmitt finished shortly after for the sweep in the same event.
Phillips later won the 400 IM (4:07.42) and 500 free (4:50.89), while classmate Andrew Geissler (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Township) placed second in the 400 IM.
In his first meet, freshman Andrzej Dubiel clinched a first-place finish in the 100 back (52.43) and placed second in the 50 free (21.91).
Winning the race by close to two seconds, senior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton) touched the wall first in the 100 breast at 56.95.
Pitt's 200 free relay team won the final swimming event as sophomore Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central), junior Andrew Burkey (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport), freshman Matt Scherer and senior Steve Jackson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) clocked in at the 1:28.92 mark.
Junior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) won the 1M and 3M diving events, while freshman Charlie Hauser (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) finished second and third on the boards. Volovetski won the 1M by nearly 100 points at 339.38.
Pitt opens Big East play tomorrow at Syracuse in a noon contest.
