PITTSBURGH--Pitt volleyball suffers its first loss of the season at Fitzgerald Field House, as the Panthers fall 3-0 to Syracuse this afternoon. Two Panthers recorded double-doubles as Pitt slipped with scores of 30-24, 30-18 and 30-27.
Pitt's (14-11, 7-4 Big East) home win streak ended at 9-0 this afternoon and remains the best record since 1987 when the team finished 13-0 at Fitzgerald Field House.
Led by junior Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) and senior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin)'s double-double, Pitt's closest game of the match was the final one. Campbell posted 16 kills and 10 digs, while Andreyko chipped in 10 kills and 14 digs.
In game three Pitt made several runs, once trailing, but were unable to overcome its deficit until a solo block from sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) tied the game at 27-27. On the next play, the Panthers would lose the serve on a Syracuse (18-10, 6-4 Big East) kill.
One of Pitt's 11 attack errors in the game would give the Orange a match point on the following ball, as the game was won on a kill by Syracuse's middle hitter.
In the first game of the match, Pitt recorded a .341 hitting clip that fell just short of the Orange's .455. Redshirt sophomore Melissa Stadelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) led the Panthers with a .667 hitting percentage, while Campbell tallied five kills. Freshman Emily Burke (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) recorded and assist on all 16 Panther kills in the game, while totaling 32 in the match.
As they did in the first game, Pitt trailed Syracuse throughout game two. The Panthers were held to just a .091 hitting percentage this time, as three members of the squad hit for a negative percentage.
Sophomore Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) tallied a game-high nine digs in that game and recorded 15 in the match.
Pitt travels to Cincinnati on Saturday, Nov. 3, for a 2 p.m. contest.
