LONG BEACH, Calif.--In it's final regular-season match, Pitt's women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to Cal Santa Barbara in the squad's second game of the Long Beach Tournament. The Panthers dropped the match with scores of 30-20, 30-16 and 30- 25.
Sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) led the team with 14 kills and added four block assists in the game, while junior Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) recorded a match-high seven blocks and chipped in six kills.
Senior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded seven kills in the match and boasts a school record 1,852 career kills.
Sophomore Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) tallied another match-high with 18 digs.
In the closest game of the match, Pitt (15-16) took the lead in the deciding game after Andreyko served three points for the Panthers and a 4-1 advantage.
A few plays later freshman Amy Town (Orillia, Ont./Orillia) recorded a service ace to give Pitt an 8-6 lead. Then after two ties in the game, freshman Emily Burke (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) assisted Moses on a kill.
After being down by as many as five, Andreyko cut the deficit to two points (22-20) with a kill assisted by junior Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton). The Gauchos (14-18) would push ahead with an 8-5 run in the end.
Taurence and Burke shared the setting duties in the match, as Taurence led with 16 and Burke added 15.
The second game of the contest included nine score ties and five lead changes. Pitt's final lead of the game ended shortly after Moses' block for a 9-8 Panther advantage. A few plays later Moses and Andreyko combined on a block to tie the score at 10-10, but a 10-3 Cal Santa Barbara run pushed the Gauchos ahead for the eventual win.
Pitt opened the match with a kill from Dooley, but soon fell behind and trailed 7-4 after a kill from UCSB. Later, the Panthers trailed 19-13 when Moses recorded a kill in the game. Moses then served two points for Pitt as they closed the gap to 19-16. However that would be as close as Pitt would come in the final plays of that first game.
The Panthers won the blocking battle with 12 totals blocks, versus eight from UCSB.
