Barnes Garners A NCAA Provisional Mark

PRINCETON, N.J.--Senior Warren Barnes tallies a NCAA-B cut with a first-place finish on the second day of the Big Al Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool, as Pitt is fourth with 369 points in the nine-team meet.
Pitt's top finish of the day came from Barnes (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton Secondary) when he turned in a NCAA-B cut time of 54.70 in the 100 breast. Barnes posted the first NCAA provisional time of the season for the Panthers. Barnes shaved nearly a second off of his preliminary time of 55.56 and touched the wall close to two second before anyone else.
Teammate Jared Martin (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) posted a sixth-place finish in the same event, while junior B.J. Conklyn (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroundsburg) was 10th.
Barnes was a part of another top-three finish when the 200 medley relay team garnered a second-place time of 1:32.54. Also swimming for the Panthers were freshman Andrzej Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland/School of Sport Championship), sophomore Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and junior Andy Burkey (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area).
Dubiel posted the second-best time in the finals of the 100 back when he stopped the clock at the 49.65 mark. Trailing just behind him, freshman Alex McLaren (North Sannich, B.C./Stellys Secondary) claimed the final spot of the finals with a 53.47 finish.
McLaren was later the second leg of the 800 free relay team that finished fifth on the day. Joining him on the team were senior Scott Shearer (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny), junior Andy Kyrejko (West Orange, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) and freshman Zach Philips (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock).
Earlier in the meet, Phillips placed fourth in the 400 IM with a time of 3:59.89, while Martin finished seventh in the finals of the same event.
Junior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) and freshman Zane McLain (Red Lion, Pa./Dallastown Area) earned a place in the finals of the 3M board, as Volovetski finished third and McLain eighth.
Competition concludes in the Big Al Invitational on Sunday at DeNunzio Pool.
