
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD PLACES SECOND AT ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

BOSTON - Pitt's women's track and field team finished second at the ECAC Indoor Championships last weekend. With 52 points, the Panthers defeated Georgetown but just fell short of Connecticut which finished with 61 points. The second day of competition consisted of finals in many of the track events, and Pitt had top-five performances in several areas.
In the 60 meters, Shantea Calhoun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) finished fourth with a time of 7.54. She was also one of two finalists in the 200 meters, placing fourth at 24.00. Sophomore Raquel Bender (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) took fifth with a personal-best time of 24.30. In the 500 meters, Pitt had two more finalists. Senior Julianna Reed (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) placed fourth with a time of 1:13.78, and freshman Kari Hedderick (Erie, Pa./Fort Lebouf) came in fifth with a personal-best 1:14.09.
Pitt's Mycaiah Clemons (New Kensington, Pa./Virginia Tech) was the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles, running a time of 8.63. The women's 1,600-meter relay of Reed, Calhoun, Bender and Selena Sappleton (Brooklyn, N.Y./A.P. Randolph) placed fifth. They ran a time of 3:47.58.
In field events, Janessa Murphy (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) took seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 11.96 meters. Murphy was the ECAC champion the long jump on the first day of competition as well. Kim Rorabaugh (Clymer, Pa./Purchase Line) finished 17th in the weight throw with a mark of 14.81 meters.
The Panthers will have two weeks off from competition before opening their outdoor season on March 23 at the Fred Hardy Invitational.
