PITTSBURGH--University of Pittsburgh senior Kathy Siuda of the Pitt women's swimming and diving team is an initiate for the Phi Beta Kappa Society's class of 2007. Siuda is one of 58 students to receive invitations to this prestigious group.
Siuda (Waterloo, Ontario/Bluevale Collegiate Institute) carries a 3.68 GPA in neuroscience with minors in chemistry and theatre arts, and was nominated because she has attained one of the highest levels of academic achievement in undergraduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences.
Only 10 percent of the nation's institutions of higher learning have Phi Beta Kappa chapters and approximately 10 percent of the arts and sciences graduates of these distinguished institutions are selected for membership into the society. Each year, about one college senior in a 100, nationwide, is invited to join Phi Beta Kappa.
As a member of the swim team, Siuda was an All-Big East selection and a Big East Academic All-Star. Siuda previously held two school records during her career, one as a member of a relay and another in the individual medley event. Siuda competed in the Big East Championships all four years and was among the team leaders in six different events, including the 1650 freestyle and the 400 IM.
"Kathy is one of the hardest workers on the team," head swimming and diving coach Chuck Knoles said. "She has been extremely successful in the classroom as well, and her being honored by Phi Beta Kappa is not unexpected by us."
The University community and friends are invited to attend the initiation of these highly accomplished students into Phi Beta Kappa. The initiation will be held in the Teplitz Memorial Courtroom in the Law School Building on Saturday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m.
