PITTSBURGH - Seven members of the Pitt women's track and field team have qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships. This year's meet will be held from May 26-27 in Gainesville, Fla.
In sprints, the team has three competitors--Raquel Bender (100 meters), Shanea Calhoun (200 meters) and Shantea Calhoun (200 meters). Bender (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) ran a season-best time of 11.71 at the ECAC Championships earlier this month. She is 25th in the regional standings. Shantea Calhoun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) has the fastest time in the 200 meters, having run a time of 23.67 at the Big East Championships, putting her 15th in the region. Shanea Calhoun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) is 26th in the region with a time of 23.95 at the Big East Championships.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Mycaiah Clemons (New Kensington, Pa./Virginia Tech) has had five regional-qualifying times with a season-best 13.80 at the ECAC Championships. She's 28th in the region. Pitt has an All-American returning for the 400-meter hurdles as Julianna Reed (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) ran a season-best 59.23 at the ECAC Championships for 10th in the region.
Martina Hallman (Miami, Fla./Miami Southridge) and Janessa Murphy (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) will both compete in the long jump. Murphy has the top distance this year at 6.24 meters from the Big East Championships, putting her ninth in the region. Hallman jumped a season-best 6.16 meters at the Morgan State meet and is 17th in the region.
Finally, the Pitt 400-meter relay team of Hallman, Bender and the Calhouns has qualified with a time of 45.32. They ran that time at the ECAC Championships and are 13th in the region.
