SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The Pitt women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to No.5 UCLA, this afternoon, at Jenny Craig Pavilion, in the Panthers' second contest of the San Diego Invitational. The Bruins won with scores of 30-22, 30-22 and 30-20.
In game one the Panthers took a 2-0 lead when junior Jessica Moses (North Olmsted, Ohio/Lutheran West) served an ace to open the game and the Bruins followed with an attack error. Pitt then jumped out 8-5 after a UCLA ball handling error a few plays later.
However, Pitt would have to take a timeout after they fell to a 14-10 deficit. Junior Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) recorded a kill on the next play, but the Panthers wouldn't get any closer in the game.
Sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and junior Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) blocked a Bruin attack to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage in game two.
Later trailing by as many as six, Pitt rallied a comeback and moved within four points, 14-10, off an attack error from UCLA. Then a kill from Moses gave the Panthers another four-point game, as Pitt trailed 15-19.
UCLA would pull away after the Panthers' 15th point and go ahead for the 30-22 victory. In the game, Campbell had three kills, one ace and a block assist.
In the final game of the match, the Panthers trailed 8-1 early, and called a timeout before Dooley would score the second point for Pitt. Dooley's kill was assisted by Taurence.
Moses and Campbell would both record kills before the Bruins' three consecutive attack errors tallied a 16-8 game in favor of UCLA.
Later freshman Emily Burke (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and Dooley chipped in back-to-back kills for Pitt, but the Panthers weren't able to close the gap the Bruins had, falling 30-20 in the game.
Dooley led the Panthers with 13 kills and a .346 hitting average, while sophomore Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) boasted 18 digs.
Pitt's final matchup of the San Diego Invitational is a nightcap against Cal State Northridge.
