STORRS, Conn.--Pitt volleyball records its fifth shutout victory of the season, as the Panthers defeated Connecticut, 3-0, this afternoon at Gampel Pavilion. Pitt won with scores of 30-27, 31-29 and 31-29.
The Panthers (9-8, 3-1 Big East) held UConn (11-5, 2-2 Big East) to a .041 hitting percentage in the match.
Sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) led the Panthers with 15 kills, while junior Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) chipped in nine kills and a team-leading three block solos. Defensively, sophomore Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) tallied a game-high 23 digs.
In game three there were 10 ties and five lead changes before Pitt would earn the match point.
Coming from behind, junior Jessica Moses (North Olmsted, Ohio/Lutheran West) tallied a kill to close the gap at 22-21 in favor of Connecticut. Moses would go on to lead the team with a .462 hitting clip in the match.
Later, senior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) would tie the game at 25 with one of her six kills in the match. However, it wasn't until a kill from junior Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) that Pitt would take a lead, 27-26.
With a 29-26 lead, Pitt was held scoreless until Dooley would break the 29-29 tie with a kill set up by freshman Emily Burke (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral). Now leading and with match point, Pitt would earn the win off an UConn attack error.
During the previous game, Pitt took a 4-0 lead off a kill from junior Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton). However, many of the points won in the match would be off 10 Huskie errors, as the Panthers collectively hit only .171 in the game.
Individually, Dooley posted seven kills and a game-high .778 hitting percentage in game two. Dooley also gave the Panthers the lead after a Pitt comeback tied the game at 29-29. With an assist from Burke, Dooley recorded a kill in the middle, leading to game point off another UConn attack error.
Burke came off the bench and recorded 22 assists in the contest.
Holding game point in game one for three serves after Taurence dumped a shot for the 29th point, Pitt earned the opening game with an attack error from the Huskies.
Pitt returns to the Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday, Oct. 6, with in a 2 p.m. match against Seton Hall.
