Women's Volleyball Comes Back In DePaul Win

CHICAGO, Ill.—In its eighth five-set match of the season, Pitt’s women’s volleyball team came back to win 3-2 over DePaul, this afternoon, at McGrath Arena. The Panthers won with scores of 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-12 and 15-3.
Senior Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) recorded a match-high 16 kills, while classmate Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) and junior Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) chipped in 12 and 11, respectively. Each one also posted hitting percentages over .400, including a .474 from Moses.
Earning the start at setter, freshman Allyson Hodnik (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded a career-high 50 assists, four digs and 16 kills in the win.
The Panthers (11-8, 4-1 Big East) jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the deciding set, which forced a DePaul (1-16, 0-5 Big East) timeout. After the timeout, Pitt went on a 7-0 run to secure its sixth win in the last seven five-set matches.
Pitt recorded a match-high .857 hitting clip in the fifth set, recording six kills on seven attempts with zero errors. In the previous set the Panthers hit 15-for-27 at .519.
Earlier, the Panthers dropped the first two sets and took a 0-2 deficit in the match. In the second set, Campbell posted seven kills, while Moses assisted on three of the five team blocks.
However, the Panthers fought back as freshman Rachel Kalberer (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) came off the bench in the third set to lead the squad with five kills. In the match, Kalberer posted a career-high eight kills, two blocks and a .316 hitting.
Next, Dooley was a perfect 6-for-6 in the fourth set as the Panthers were in sole control during the fourth set. In that same contest, Hodnik assisted on 13 of Pitt’s 15 kills.
Senior Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) added nine digs and two block assists in the match. Additionally, she led the match after she went 5-for-7 for a .714 hitting clip.
The Blue Demons had a team-high 16 kills in the second set, but were held to under 10 in every other contest. They finished the match with a .144 hitting percentage and were out-blocked 12-3.
Pitt faces Notre Dame in the ‘Dig for a Cure’ match on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m.
