PITTSBURGH -- Fresh off their second-place finish at the Delaware Alumni Invitational, the University of Pittsburgh men's cross country team broke into the regional rankings for the first time this season. The Panthers climbed to No. 14 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
At the Delaware Invite, Pitt finished second to host Delaware, who entered the race No. 13 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
"We are glad to be ranked, but not happy with where we are in the standings," said coach Clinton Bell. "I believe if these guys run up to their training, they could move significantly higher. We'll see what happens at the regional championships."
Although the Panthers did not field two of their top five runners, freshman Greg Kareis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) picked up the slack, finishing at 25:45.44. Kareis edged out Delaware's Chris Bourke by just over a second for first place honors in the 8k race.
The Panther men and women are idle until Friday, Oct. 31, when they travel to Van Cortlandt Park, N.Y., to compete in the Big East Championships.
