Dubiel Records Three First-Place Finishes

PITTSBURGH—Sophomore Andrzej Dubiel earned three first-place finishes, as the University of Pittsburgh men’s swimming and diving team earned a 179-119 decision over St. Bonaventure, in Pitt’s season opener.
Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland) opened the meet as the lead leg of the winning 200 medley relay team that stopped the clock at 1:35.38. Joining him on the relay was senior Jonathan Buchanan (Beavercreek, Ohio), junior Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.J.) and senior B.J. Conklyn (Stroudsburg, Pa.).
Later Dubiel won back-to-back swimming events, as he turned in a 21.47 finish in the 50 free and a time of 48.03 in the 100 free.
In his first dual meet with the Panthers, sophomore Bobby Smith (Copiague, N.Y.) won the 100 back (52.42), while classmate Dan Connealy (Phoenix, Ariz.) placed third in the same event. Smith also took first in the 200 back (1:54.05) a few races later.
Additionally, freshman Rousseau Kluever (Cape Town, South Africa) earn two first-place finishes in his first meet. Kluever won the 200 fly (1:53.59) and 500 free (4:42.75), while placing second in the 200 free.
In the 200 free, sophomore Alex McLaren (North Saaich, B.C., Canada) led Pitt with a time of 1:44.94, while Kluever edged out the third-place swimmer from St. Bonaventure by 16 tenths of a second at 1:45.04.
Buchanan later returned and won the 100 breast (58.45), while Conklyn placed third in the same event.
Pitt’s diving team proved to be as dominate as it has in recent years, as the Panthers swept both diving events. On the 3M board, the top three finishers were senior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla.), sophomore Collin Forner (Allentown, Pa.) and senior Eric Becker (Lancaster, Pa.), respectively.
Later, Forner won the 1M diving event, as Volovetski and sophomore Zane McLain (Red Lion, Pa.) rounded out the sweep for the Panthers.
Pitt opens Big East action on Friday, Oct. 31, as it travels to Notre Dame, for a 5 p.m. meet.
