PITTSBURGH--Sophomore Kristen McMullan won three individual events, as Pitt's swimming and diving team earned a 196-97 victory over St. Bonaventure, in the Panthers' 2008-09 season opener.
McMullan (West Chester, Pa.) led the Panthers with three individual first-place finishes on the day. Her first title was decided in the 50 free at 24.44, where she edged out freshman Yoland Van Rooyen's (Phalaborwa, South Africa) 24.94.
Later, McMullan was the first to touch the wall in the 100 free and 100 fly.
During the meet, Pitt swept several events, including two that sophomore Laura Barnes (Pickering, Ont.) won. First, Barnes claimed the victory in the 100 breast at 1:05.78. Seniors Ruth Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa.) and Erika Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela) and sophomore Cookie McIntyre (York, Pa.) then followed closely behind.
Winning her second race, Barnes touched first in the 200 breast at 2:24.15, while junior Sophie Cross (Thornton, Pa.) and Rodriguez placed second and third, respectively.
Barnes was also the second leg of the 200 medley relay team that turned in a first-place finish with a time of 1:47.71. Barnes was joined by junior Ryann Kishbaugh (Danville, Pa.), sophomore Caitlin Trant (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Emily DeStefano (Flourtown, Pa.) on that team.
Pitt also swept the 100 back, as Kishbaugh, freshman Megan Bender (Allen Park, Mich.) and junior Allie Horvath (Oxford, Ohio) claimed the first three finishes in the event. Kishbaugh recorded the top finish at 59.23.
Bender later returned with a top finish in the 200 back (2:07.07) and Kishbaugh placed second in the same event.
Junior Katie Cutrell (Ligonier, Pa.) was a multi-event winning, placing first in the 500 free (5:01.76) and 1000 free (10:10.19). Additionally, senior Erin Meehan (West Chester, Pa.) won the 200 free (1:55.07).
Pitt's diving team was victorious on both boards, as the Panthers swept the 1M and 3M events. Junior Margo Ekstrom (Erie, Pa.) led the way on the 1M board with a score of 249.30. Sophomore Mallory Mullady (Lake Bluff, Ill.), senior Sabrina Jennings (Elmont, N.Y.) and sophomore Alyssa Ferraro (Ridgewood, N.J.) rounded out the top four in the event.
Later, Ferraro took first in the 3m event, while Ekstrom, Jennings and Mullady placed second through fourth, respectively.
Pitt opens Big East action on Friday, Oct. 31, as it travels to Notre Dame, for a 5 p.m. meet.
