Cross Country Competes at Big East Championships

NEW YORK — The University of Pittsburgh cross country teams took part in the Big East Championships today at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City, N.Y. The men’s team took ninth place while the women’s team finished in 15th place.
Freshman Greg Kareis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area), the reigning Big East Male Athlete of the Week, paced the Panther men, finishing the 8,000 meter race at 25:46 for 40th place. It was the fifth time in six races this season Karies has been the first Panther to cross the finish line.
Following a second behind Karies for 41st place was sophomore Josh Christopher (Irwin, Pa.-Penn-Trafford). Christopher joins sophomore Teddy Miller (Ambler, Pa./Ambler) in finishing within the top-50 in the nearly 120-man field. Miller finished at 25:57, crossing the tape in 49th place.
On the women’s side, senior Ali Briggs (Washington, Pa./Washington) again led the Panther charge. Briggs finished at 23:06 in the 6,000 meter race. Also finishing in the top-100 was freshman Myia Johnson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) (89th-23:18) and junior Monica Bhattacharjee (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) who finished 98th with a time of 23:47.
The Georgetown men had five of the top-10 finishers and were led by Andrew Bumbalough who took first place honors. The Hoyas won their sixth Big East Men’s Championship and first since 2003. Villanova’s women’s team won their 11th team championship after having four of the top-10 runners, including runner-up Frances Koons.
On the schedule next for Pitt is the NCAA Regional Championship, held in Princeton, N.J. on Saturday, Nov. 15.
