Lucas Named Pitt Performer the Hoosierland Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—Freshman Jake Lucas was named Pitt Performer of the Meet, as the University of Pittsburgh men’s swimming and diving team gained valuable experience at the Hoosierland Invitational at Indiana University, this past weekend. No team scores were kept for this event.
Lucas (Richmond, Va./Liberty) was selected as the Pitt Performer of the Meet after he advanced to the finals in three events and placed in the top 16 in four. First, Lucas was seventh in the 200 free. Then, he tied for seventh in the 100 free (45.44), turned in an eighth-place performance in the 100 fly and placed 16th in the 50 free.
Also advancing to the finals, sophomore Andrzej Dubiel (Dzierzoniow, Poland/School of Sport Championship) tied for fifth in the 200 back, while freshman Bobby Smith (Long Island, N.Y./St. John’s the Baptist/Pacific) touched next for seventh in the finals of the same event. In two other individual events, Dubiel recorded a fifth-place finish in the 100 back and took ninth in the finals of the 50 free.
Freshman Rousseau Kluever (Cape Town, South Africa/Rondebosch) finished fifth in the 200 fly (1:50.69). He also improved upon a prelim finish to earn seventh in the 200 IM (1:53.41). In his third individual event, he took ninth in the 400 IM.
Rounding out the multi-event top 10 finishers, freshman Alex Navarro (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) recorded a sixth-place finish in the 200 free and improved from 17th to ninth with a 4:32.10 finish in the 500 free.
In the consolation race for the 200 back, senior Jon Buchanan (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) finished 13th and sophomore Alex McLaren (North Saanich, B.C./Stellys Secondary) was 14th. Buchanan was also 10th in the 400 IM and 13th in the 100 breast, while McLaren was seventh in the 100 fly.
Junior Alex Kubicek (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) touched for 12th in the 100 free and 14th in the 50 free, while junior Charlie Zettel (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and McLaren placed 14th and 16th in the 200 fly, respectively. Zettel would also place 15th in the 100 breast and 16th in the 200 IM.
Freshman Dawid Goszczycki (Olsztyn, Poland/Pine Crest) placed 13th in the 1650 free and 15th in the 400 IM. Additionally, freshman Steven Forrest (State College, Pa./State College Area) was 16th in the 400 IM.
Pitt’s 400 free relay team of Dubiel, Navarro, Kubicek and Lucas placed third at 3:04.74. Switching legs, Dubiel, Lucas, Kubicek and Navarro also placed fourth in the 200 free relay (1:23.41). Later, Dubiel, Buchanan, Lucas and Navarro combined for a fourth-place finishes in the200 and 400 medley relay events.
The 800 free relay team placed seventh, as freshman David Shen (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson), Goszczycki, freshman Ryan Lynn (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) and Kluever touched the wall at 6:59.83.
