PITTSBURGH--The women's track and field team continues the 2007-08 season this weekend at the Big East Indoor Championships. The two-day meet will be held at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City on Feb. 23 and 24.
Continuing to lead the way in sprints for the Panthers are seniors Shantea and Shanea Calhoun (New Haven, CT/Wilbur Cross). The twins claimed second and third place, respectively, in the 200 meter dash last season as both garnered All-Big East honors. Shantea is second in the league in the event with a time of 24.38 which she recorded at the Rod McCravy Memorial. The Calhoun sisters will be joined by teammates Kari Hedderik (Erie, PA/Fort Lebouf) and Kaetlyn Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Schenley) in the 4 x 400 meter relay. Brown is also set to compete as a No. 4 seed in the 400 meter event.
Junior Mycaiah Clemons (New Kensington, PA/Virginia Tech) will also be a key contributor, representing the Panthers with the league's top time of 8.56 in the 60-meter hurdles.
Standing out in the field events for the Panthers are senior Martina Hallman (Miami, FL/Miami Southridge) and junior Janessa Murphy (Malvern, PA/Great Valley). Hallman's marks of 11.75 meters in the triple jump and 5.88 meters in the long jump put her in sixth and eighth place, respectively, in the Big East. Murphy is looking to repeat her first-place performance from last year's championships as the top seed in the long jump with a distance of 6.21 meters. She is also slated to compete in the triple jump and 60 meter dash.
Last season, the Panthers claimed a fourth-place, overall finish with several competitors claiming Big East honors. This year's competition will begin each day at 8 a.m. Fans can watch live online at www.bigeast.tv or follow live results online at www.bigeast.org.
