PITTSBURGH--The Pitt men's and women's track and field teams competed in two meets this weekend, one at the University of Tennessee and the other at Slippery Rock University. The Panthers had outstanding performances at both meets and had five first-place finishes.
At the Sea Ray Relays at Tennessee, Ron Walter (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) placed first in the pole vault open after registering a height of 5.05 meters. Walter tied for sixth overall in the pole vault invitational. Junior Matt Raquet (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) took first in the javelin open with a distance of 64.64 meters. He placed third overall in the javelin invitational.
Senior Sam Bair (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kent State) placed sixth in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:48.94. Curtis Larimer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) also placed in the top-ten with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meters. Larimer recorded a time of 31:18.45 in the event.
Mike Wray (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) recorded a time of 14.13 in the 110-meter hurdles, landing in eighth place overall.
In the women's long jump, Janessa Murphy (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) registered a distance of 6.07 meters, taking sixth place.
In the 400-meter shuttle hurdle, Brianna Broyles (Allentown, Pa./William Allen), Anita James (Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mt. West), Jazmin Hunt (Reading, Pa./Reading) and Kari Weimerskirch (Tiffin, Ohio/Mohawk) placed fourth overall with their time of 59.43.
At the Slippery Rock Invitational, Ali Briggs, Kim Rorabaugh and Teddy Miller all captured their event titles. Briggs (Washington, Pa./Washington) recorded a time of 4:52.15 in the 1,500 meters and Rorabaugh (Clymer, Pa./Purchase Line) posted a distance of 53.10 meters in the hammer throw. Miller (Ambler, Pa./Ambler) took the 5,000 meter title with a time of 15:27.37.
Three Panthers recorded top-ten finishes in the 100-meter hurdles. Aurielle McCauley (Romulus, Mich./Romulus) took fourth with a time of 15.79, while teammate Erinn McMahon (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) placed sixth with a time of 15.99. Taking eighth place was Kaitlyn Flynn (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) with her time of 16.07.
Senior Nikki Bielick (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) placed eighth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20:04.69
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Melissa Vignetti (Pittsburgh, Pa./McMurray) registered a time of 12:45.76, placing sixth.
Jaquelyn Rucker (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) posted a distance of 1.47 meters in the high jump, tying with three others for seventh place.
Shanae Thomas and Wunmi Fapohunda both took top-five finishes in the women's long jump. Thomas (Philadelphia, Pa./John Hallahan Catholic) tied for third with a distance of 4.99 meters and Fapohunda (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) took fifth with 4.98 meters.
In the shot put, Ashley Moore (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) placed second with 12.43 meters. Kayla Comrie (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) registered a distance of 35.35 meters in the discus for a third-place finish. Alexis Wilder (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Ridge) finished in third with a distance of 34.31 meters.
With a distance of 35.41 meters in the javelin, Kelsey Voltz (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) placed sixth overall.
The Panthers had other top finishes in the men's 5000 meters, including a second-place finish for Josh Christopher (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford), a third-place finish for Sam Weiser (New Castle, Pa./Army), a fifth-place finish for Kyle Kaminski (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and an eighth-place finish for John Morrow (Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall).
Junior Will Grinstead (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) placed fifth overall in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.92.
In the hammer throw, A.J. Kielinski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic) recorded a distance of 50.83 meters, placing fourth overall.
