PITTSBURGH--The Pitt baseball team defeated Cleveland State 9-1 Wednesday evening at Trees Field, holding the Vikings scoreless after the first inning. The Panthers racked up 10 hits in the win as Danny Lopez and Nick Mullins both launch homeruns in the non-conference matchup.
Lopez (SO/Queens, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) ripped his fifth homerun of the season in the bottom of the first inning, tying the game at 1-1 as Mullins (SR/Brick, N.J./Brookdale Community College) added insurance for the Panthers (15-25) with a two-run shot of his own later in the game.
The Vikings (20-21) used five pitchers in the contest and were held to just six hits by a trio of freshmen Pitt hurlers. Starter Kevin Dooley (FR/Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) picked up his first career win tallying five strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched, while allowing just one run off three hits.
Relievers Corey Baker (FR/New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and David Kaye (FR/Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) each put in 2.0 innings of work, combining for four scoreless innings on the mound while allowing just another three hits between them.
Lopez, Mullins and Jordan Herr (RS SO/Lancaster, Pa./Delaware) all tallied multi-hit efforts at the plate as Mullins picked up three RBI in the process.
Pitt will be back in action Friday as it heads to Villanova for a three-game conference series this weekend. Games are slated to start at 3:15 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 12:15 p.m. on Sunday.
