Three Panthers Compete In Canadian Olympic Trials

PITTSBURGH--Senior Warren Barnes and freshmen Laura Barnes and Alex McLaren, of the Pitt swimming and diving team competed in the Canadian Olympic Trials in Montreal, among some of Canada's premier swimmers looking to qualify for the 2008 summer Olympics.
Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton) competed in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke events, placing fifth the finals of the 100 breast at 1:03.25. Later, he finished eighth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.71.
His younger sister Laura Barnes (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton) also competed in the same breaststroke events. She would place 54th in the prelims of the 100 breast (1:16.17) and 59th in the prelims of the 200 breast (2:45.08).
Competing in three events, McLaren (North Sannich, B.C., Canada/Stellys Secondary) clocked in at 1:00.13 in the prelims of the 100 backstroke for a 31st-place finish. Later, he earned a top-30 finish when he touched the wall at 2:10.11 in the 200 backstroke prelims for 29th overall.
McLaren was also a member of the Island Swimming Club team in the 400-meter medley relay that finished at 3:55.19.
