Safritt Qualifies For Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Nev.--Senior Stacie Safritt qualified for the 2008 US Swimming Olympic Trials, as several members of Pitt's swimming and diving team competed at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational, held in the Qwest Center.
The Qwest Center will also be the site of the 2008 US Swimming Olympic Trials, where Safritt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) will swim after she recorded a qualifying time in the 50 free at 26.19. Her time earned her a 17th-place finish, improving from 27th in the prelims.
Safritt also swam in the 100 free (58.54) and 200 free (2:07.33), during the meet.
Also competing in the 50 free was sophomore Kristen McMullan (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), who touched the wall at 27.50 in the prelims.
McMullan's other events included the 100 free (1:00.63) and 100 fly (1:06.42).
Rounding out the members of the team from the women's squad, junior Lisa McDonnell (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) touched the wall at 59.66 in the prelims of the 100 free.
On the men's side, senior Jonathan Buchanan (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) recorded a top-25 finish with a swim of 4:47.31 in the finals of the 400 IM, placing 24th overall.
Similarly, junior Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) turned in a top-50 time in the prelims of the 100 fly at 57.44.
Morgan also competed in the 50 free, where he touched the wall at 24.94, behind teammate junior Alex Kubicek (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway). Kubicek finished at 24.46.
Additionally, former Panther Kristin Brown (2003-07) finished 10th in the 200 free, 12th in the 100 free, 12th in the 400 free and 20th in the 50 free.
Safritt and Brown will represent Pitt at the Olympic Trails from June 29 through July 6 in Omaha, Nev.
