Women's Volleyball Earns Another Shutout

PITTSBURGH--Pitt's women's volleyball team earned its ninth shutout of the season as the Panthers blanked West Virginia in its "Blocking Out Breast Cancer" match, this evening, at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers improved to 15-8 on the season and 7-2 in the Big East, while the Mountaineers slipped to 13-11 overall and 3-6 in the league.
Prior to the match, head coach Toby Rens welcomed Linda DeVos, a representative of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, at half court. Pitt later announced that over $4oo was raised on the night, to support finding a cure for breast cancer.
In the match, senior Meagan Dooley tied a match-high 11 kills and five blocks, while junior Amy Town posted 10 kills and six digs in the match.
Sophomore Allyson Hodnik recorded a match-high 36 assists, and senior Michelle Rossi chipped in 12 digs.
Pitt was effective at the net, collecting seven team blocks and holding West Virginia to a .123 hitting percentage. Dooley led the Panthers with a .476 hitting clip, while junior Imani Harper was 8-for-13 for a .462 percentage.
The Panthers won the first set, 25-19, off five kills from Dooley. Hodnik also collected 14 assists on the 16 Pitt kills.
Town posted a game-high six kills in the second set, going 6-for-14. Rossi and freshman Melanie Feldman recorded five digs, apiece in the game.
Sophomore Rachel Kalberer recorded a team-high four kills in the final set. As a team, Pitt hit .324 in the contest, while holding West Virginia to just .111 in the 25-23 victory.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. against St. John's.
