STORRS, Conn.—Pitt’s women’s volleyball team earns its 11th shutout of the season and seventh in Big East play, with a 3-0 victory over Connecticut at Harry A. Gampel Pavillion, this afternoon. The Panthers won the match with scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-18. Pitt improves to 17-8 on the season and 9-2 in conference action, while the Huskies fell to 12-14 overall and 5-5 in the league.
In their fourth consecutive shutout, the Panthers out-blocked UConn 9.5-4.0. Leading Pitt at the net was junior Imani Harper with five stuffs, while collecting seven kills.
The Panthers also hit at .394 in the match, while sophomore Allyson Hodnik recorded 45 assists on 50 Pitt kills. Seniors Meagan Dooley and Melissa Stadelman and junior Amy Town each recorded double-digit kills, posting 17, 10 and 11, respectively.
On defense, senior Michelle Rossi chipped in a match-high 19 digs, while Dooley added four blocks.
Pitt and UConn opened the match close, but the Panthers would eventually pull away and hold a 13-8 advantage in the set. Later, a block from Town, Harper and Stadelman would give Pitt a 22-17 lead and force a Huskie timeout. Each of the three on the block would then record one kill on one of the next three serves, lifting Pitt to a 1-0 lead in the match.
In that first set, the Panthers hit at .387 and recorded 4.5 blocks, while holding UConn to a .061 hitting clip. Additionally, Hodnik recorded an assist on all 16 team kills.
Pitt continued hitting well in the second set, posting a .405 hitting percentage. Dooley collected a game-high nine kills for the Panthers, while the Huskies combined for 11 total as a team, in the set.
At the end of two games, Dooley was hitting at .545, while Harper boasted a .556, going 6-for-9 in both games.
In the final set, Stadelman was a perfect 5-for-5 on the attack, while Pitt as a team hit .387. Freshman Jenn Katona also saw action in the game and recorded a kill off one swing.
The Panthers resume play on Sunday, Nov. 8, hosting Villanova at 2 p.m.
