Trant Earns Pitt Performer of the Meet

PITTSBURGH—Junior Caitlin Trant earned Pitt Performer of the Meet, as the University of Pittsburgh women’s swimming and diving team recorded a 181-111 victory over Akron, this evening, at Trees Pool. Pitt improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Zips slipped to 1-4.
Trant was one of several Panthers to win an individual event in the meet. She touched first in the 100 fly with a time of 57.32. In that event, Trant sparked a sweep, as sophomores Tamara Lelli and Yolandi Van Rooyen finished next.
In the first swimming event of the day, the 200 medley relay team of freshman Joanna Budzis, junior Laura Barnes, Van Rooyen and junior Kristen McMullan touched first with a time of 1:46.10.
Budzis and Barnes also earned individual wins on the day. Budzis finished first in both the 100 and 200 back with times of 57.19 and 2:02.75, respectively. Meanwhile, Barnes took the 100 breast, touching the wall at 1:05.48 and was closely followed by freshman Yolandi Van Der Merwe and senior Sophie Cross for second and third. Barnes also finished first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:17.78. Pitt swept that event, as well, as Cookie McIntyre and Cross placed next.
The Panthers then took the top three spots in the 1,000 free, led by freshman Tori Alland with a time of 10:16.61. Classmates Kelsey Herbst and Elizabeth Tabor touched next, completing the sweep for the Panthers. Alland also won the 500 free, finishing at 5:00.97 with teammate Herbst touching immediately after.
Senior Lisa McDonnell was another multi-event winner, coming in first in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events with times of 51.59 and 1:51.02, respectively. McDonnell was followed in the 100 free by sophomore Elena Spak, who also finished second in the 50 free.
McIntyre also earned a first-place finish for the Panthers in the 200 fly at 2:04.33.
On the diving board, junior Morgan Speece won the 3M diving event for Pitt with a score of 240.35. She was followed by senior Margo Ekstrom, who finished with 237.30 points.
Pitt’s divers are in action on Nov. 20 in the Hoosierland Invitational, while the swimmers have a break till Dec. 4, when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Ohio State Invitational.
