Women's Volleyball Travels For Two Matches In Virginia

PITTSBURGH—Pitt’s women’s volleyball team travels to Richmond, Va. for a pair of matches against regionally ranked CAA teams in the VCU Thanksgiving Invitational at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Panthers face host VCU at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, and then play Delaware on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m.
Pitt (20-9) is coming off a 3-1 loss in the quarterfinals of the Big East Championship. During the contest, sophomore Allyson Hodnik recorded a match-high 52 assists, while All-Big East selection Amy Town recorded 17 kills and 13 digs.
Prior to the start of the tournament, seniors Meagan Dooley and Michelle Rossi were named the Big East Player of the Year and Libero of the Year, respectively. Dooley became the fifth Panther to earn that distinction and Rossi became just the second Pitt libero to be honored as such.
Friday’s contest marks the fourth meeting between Pitt and VCU, as the Panthers have won all three of the previous matches. The Rams are coming off a five-set loss to George Mason in the CAA Championship game. Mariel Frey led VCU (25-9) with 21 kills, 20 digs and four blocks in the championship match.
The Panthers also hold an 11-1 series advantage over Delaware (19-8). The Blue Hens were also upended by George Mason in the CAA Tournament, falling 3-2 in the semifinals. Katie Dennehy led Delaware with 16 kills in the contest.
